Organic Hog Roast

About Us

The Owners

George and Johannes (both South Africans by the way, and very proud of it) arrived in the UK sometime in 2002/2003. This is when they started their first catering venture: www.nyama-catering.co.uk, another outside catering company but with a South African twist. Nyama is hugely successful, but we have found a screaming demand in the market for organic catering that could not be satisfied through Nyama Catering, hence starting up organic-hogroast.co.uk where we aim to deliver this service. So through our experience in the industry we are very confident that we will be able to exceed our customers´ expectations time and time again.

The License

Organic-hogroast.co.uk is also very proud of the fact that we obtained licensing in order to trade as organic caterers. Please view it here.

The Policy

Now you probably expect us to tell you how we are going to save the planet with organic food and all that. Yes, George and Johannes will single-handedly put an end to Global Warming, and all the other pressing Green issues, through their small venture organig-hogroast.co.uk ... I don´t think so.

But hey! We do our bit and so should you: through placing an order with us…just joking.

To be serious now, at Organic Hog Roast we believe that most companies have jumped on the green band wagon and are making a killing through charging premiums for their "so called" greener service. And now, if you think about this, is it really so green then? If it´s charged at a premium, surely that premium must come from somewhere. Yes you got it: making more money to pay the premium - means more energy use - means not really helping the environment ...

That´s why our policy at Organic Hog Roast would be to NOT charge a premium for our services just because it´s "greener" than the rest, there really is no need for it. So through supplying a service that in itself is eco-positive, and then through charging non organic market prices for it, we really are trying our honest best to make a difference ... all be it a small one.

So, what makes organic food organic?

Well according to DEFRA (Department for Environment, food and rural affairs): "In one sense all food is organic, because it has come from plants or animals. However for some fifty years the word organic has been used to describe food grown without most artificial fertilisers or pesticides and in a way that emphasises crop rotation, making the most of natural fertilisers and ensuring that the life of the soil is maintained. Animals are kept in ways which minimise the need for medicines and other chemical treatments."

And why is this better for me than non – organic food?

Nobody said it was, now did they!? The fact of the matter is that organic food is not necessarily always more nutritious and healthier. For instance an organic banana will not differ in nutrition from a non organic banana due to the fact that it has such a thick skin meaning no pesticides would have made it through to the bit you eat anyway. But in general, though, it is safe to say that organic, and more particularly, "sustainably grown" foods are better overall, considering the nutritional value, absence of chemical residues, and less adverse affect upon the environment.
